It typically lasts a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To go back to our previous examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a platformer: cross a section of the level \u2192 reach a checkpoint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an FPS: enter a building \u2192 eliminate enemies \u2192 pick up loot \u2192 move to the next building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an RTS: select units \u2192 group them \u2192 move them across the map \u2192 have them attack an enemy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The variety and sequencing of these session loops is what gives the game its rhythm, keeping the player's interest sustained over time.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macro-loop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The macro-loop corresponds to the completion of an entire level through a series of session loops. Spanning several minutes to hours, this is the level where the nesting of different loop types really becomes apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a platformer: traverse all the sections of the level \u2192 defeat the boss \u2192 reach the exit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an FPS: progress through the different areas of the mission \u2192 complete objectives (rescue a hostage, destroy a target, secure a zone) \u2192 finish the mission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an RTS: establish a base \u2192 develop the economy \u2192 build an army \u2192 engage the enemy \u2192 win the match.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this scale, the complete experience of a level takes shape: all of the player's actions gain meaning by contributing to a clearly defined overall objective.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meta-loop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meta-loop is the broadest level: it encompasses the player's progression across all macro-loops, over hours, days, or even months of play (especially since the rise of battle pass models). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what gives the player a reason to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a platformer: complete levels one by one \u2192 unlock new worlds with new mechanics \u2192 finish the game.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an FPS: chain missions together \u2192 progress through the campaign or rank up in multiplayer \u2192 unlock new weapons and abilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an RTS: win matches \u2192 progress through the campaign or climb the online rankings \u2192 master new factions and strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where player retention is won or lost: a game with satisfying macro-loops but a weak meta-loop will be enjoyed in the moment, then forgotten. A well-designed meta-loop, on the other hand, turns a good experience into a game you keep coming back to.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meta-loop doesn't just hand out rewards: it gradually shapes the player themselves. Across macro-loops, it's not just their stats that evolve, but their mastery, their understanding of the system, and the way they approach the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case study: Pharaoh<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let's look at a practical example: Pharaoh, a game developed by Impressions Games and released in 1999. Understanding their hierarchy, from the micro-loop repeated hundreds of times to the meta-loop that stretches across weeks, helps explain why some games captivate and others lose us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But knowing this classification isn't enough: the true quality of gameplay lies in how each loop nests within and interacts with the others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do tensions between scales create interesting decisions?
